What to Wear for Family Photos: Complete Guide

By Becky Minnick

One of the most common questions I get as a Chillicothe photographer is "What should we wear for our family photos?" The right outfit choices can make a huge difference in how your photos turn out. After photographing hundreds of families across Livingston County, I've learned what works best.

The Golden Rule: Coordinate, Don't Match

Gone are the days of everyone wearing identical white shirts and jeans. Instead, think about coordinating colors and styles that complement each other without being too matchy-matchy. Choose a color palette of 2-3 colors and have each family member wear different combinations of those colors.

Best Color Palettes for Missouri Sessions

Spring Sessions

Soft pastels work beautifully with spring blooms: blush pink, soft blue, cream, and sage green. These colors complement the fresh greenery and flowering trees without competing with the natural backdrop.

Summer Sessions

Vibrant jewel tones stand out against summer's lush greenery: navy blue, burgundy, mustard yellow, and emerald green. These rich colors photograph beautifully in golden hour light.

Fall Sessions

Warm earth tones enhance fall foliage: rust orange, deep burgundy, olive green, cream, and brown. These colors create a cozy, cohesive look that's perfect for the season.

Winter Sessions

Classic and rich colors work best: deep reds, forest green, navy, cream, and plum. These colors pop against winter's muted landscape and work well for holiday cards.

Fabric and Texture Matters

Mix different textures to add visual interest to your photos. Combine smooth fabrics with chunky knits, denim with lace, or cotton with leather. Layers like cardigans, scarves, and jackets add dimension and give everyone something to do with their hands.

What to Avoid

  • Busy patterns: Large logos, bold graphics, or busy prints can be distracting. If someone wants to wear a pattern, make it subtle and pair it with solids.
  • Neon colors: Overly bright, fluorescent colors can cast unflattering color casts on skin tones.
  • All black or all white: While these can work in certain settings, they're challenging to photograph well and can lack dimension.
  • Wrinkly or ill-fitting clothes: Make sure everything is steamed or ironed and fits well. Baggy clothes can add visual weight.

Styling Tips for Each Family Member

For Mom

Choose a dress or outfit that makes you feel confident and comfortable. Flowy dresses photograph beautifully and work well for movement shots. Avoid sleeveless tops if you're self-conscious about arms - opt for 3/4 sleeves instead. Build the family's color palette around your outfit since moms often have the hardest time choosing.

For Dad

Button-down shirts in solid colors or subtle patterns work well. Roll up the sleeves for a casual, relaxed look. Dark jeans or chinos pair nicely with most shirts. A sport coat or cardigan adds polish without being too formal.

For Kids

Comfort is key for kids. Choose outfits they can move freely in and won't be constantly adjusting. For girls, knee-length dresses or skirts with leggings are practical and pretty. For boys, button-downs with jeans or khakis work well. Let older kids have some input so they feel good about what they're wearing.

For Toddlers and Babies

Keep it simple and comfortable. Soft fabrics that won't irritate sensitive skin are essential. Bring a backup outfit in case of spills or accidents. Rompers, simple dresses, and suspenders all photograph adorably.

Accessorize Thoughtfully

Accessories can enhance your photos when used strategically. Scarves, hats, headbands, and simple jewelry add personality without overwhelming. Avoid overly large or distracting accessories. For fall sessions, boots and booties are perfect. For summer, bare feet or simple sandals work beautifully.

The Two-Week-Before Test

Try on your complete outfit at least two weeks before your session. This gives you time to make changes if needed. Make sure nothing is too tight, too short, or uncomfortable. You'll be moving around, sitting, and interacting naturally - your clothes should allow for that.

Location-Specific Considerations

Think about where your session will take place. For rustic barn locations around Chillicothe, earthy tones and boots fit perfectly. For downtown sessions, you might go for a slightly dressier look. Beach or lake locations call for light, flowy fabrics. Your photographer (that's me!) can help guide you based on your chosen location.

The Morning Of Your Session

Hang outfits up the night before to avoid wrinkles. Get dressed last (especially kids!) to minimize spills and messes. Bring a lint roller for last-minute touch-ups. If someone is uncertain about their outfit, bring a backup option - we can always take a few test shots and switch if needed.
